Homework 1
The goal of this assignment is to familiarize yourself with the
software we will be using for music creation this semester. You will
need access to a computer of fairly recent manufacture that runs
either Microsoft Windows
XP/Vista or Mac OS X.
1. Download and Install the Renoise Sequencer/Tracker software. As long as you obtain it from the official site, the software is virus and advertisement free, and will not damage your system in any way.
2. Open the Renoise program, and load one of the sample songs. Hit the “play” button to ensure that your system’s audio is functioning normally. Should you run into any problems at this step, please visit tine online help (with tutorials for all of the basic tasks) at http://www.renoise.com/help.
3. Using only the sounds that come packaged with the Renoise program, please write your own version of the musical work “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” You will only need to write one complete statement of the theme, in ABA format. For reference, you may use this:

4. To turn in this assignment, please email it to me or bring it with you to class on a USB storage key.
Semester 1
Homework 2
Using the on-line resources at your disposal, please find an example of the following kinds of works. You may not use them duplicate; you must find five independent sources:
• A work protected by US Copyright.
• A work NOT protected by US Copyright.
• A work in the public domain in the United States.
• A work in the public domain elsewhere, but not in the United States.
• A work that you believe infringes on the copyright of another work.
These can be of any permanently fixed medium that can be seen or heard. You will not need to bring in the specific work in any printed or electronic form; rather you will prepare a document with the following information to submit for credit:
• Cite where the source was found, specifically the hyper text transfer protocol (HTTP)
address of it’s on-line location as displayed by the web browser.
• List the names of all those involved in creating the work (whether original or derivative).
• Describe using the terminology we have learned to date regarding copyright and fair use
evaluate your assessment of that work’s protections under US copyright law.
You will be graded on your ability to express your understanding of the concepts regarding
Copyright that we have learned in class.
This assignment is due on our first class meeting in December.
Homework 1
1. Visit the resources page here on the site.
2. Download and install the Audacity audio editing software.
3. Download and open up this
sound
clip using Audacity. I suggest that you right-click on the link
and select "Save Link As" to save it to your hard drive.
4. Create a new work of audio out of the sound clip by cutting,
pasting, rearranging, and using some of the effects in the program.
We will cover new effects each week in class.
5. Save your work each time as an Audacity Project File (*.aup).
When you are ready to submit your final work to me, you will want to
use the command "File->Export" and save as an OGG file.
6. Email your *.ogg file or bring it on a USB key to class. You are
welcome to bring your in-progress work to class to share and discuss
possible editing options with Mr. Wie and your peers.
This homework is due on our first class meeting in October.
